Gallo-ping Horse Game

Horse Game

This horse game has been around for many years. I have seen other versions of the game, but I decided to make one that is shaped like a horse racing track. The images below are from games that I have handcrafted. The game board is made of birch wood. The dimensions of the board are 30 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 4 inches tall. The horses with jockeys are plastic. I cut metal dowels, drill holes in the bottom of the horses, and hot glue the cut dowels in the horses.

What is included:
     Horse game board
     11 horses
     deck of cards
     2 dice
     a copy of these instructions

How to play:
Remove the jokers, aces and kings from the deck of cards. The deck now consists of 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, Jacks, and Queens.
The remaining cards represent the horse numbers. So the 2 card represents the 2 horse, the 3 cards represent the 3 horse, and so on. The Jacks represent the 11 horse and the Queens represent the 12 horse. The suits (diamonds, hearts, spades, clubs) do not matter. All suits of the card represents the horse.

Put horses in their starting positions. (Furthest away from the finish line. The number 2 and 12 horse have the shortest distance, whereas the 7 horse has the longest distance. This will be explained later.

Determine who goes first. You can use the dice or use the cards. After you determine who goes first, this person shuffles the cards and deals all the cards out. (You can play with 2 to 9 players) It does not matter that some players get more cards than others. That is just luck of the draw.

How to Determine the Money Horses:
The first four players roll the dice to determine the money horses.

The dealer rolls the dice, whatever number is rolled that is the .25 cent horse.
Move this horse from it's starting position to the grid above the finish line. Place the horse in the hole where the horse number lines up with the .25 cent column.
Any player that has this card (i.e. horse number) should turn the card over. This horse is not in the race and can not win.

The person to the left of the dealer rolls the dice, whatever number is rolled that is the .50 cent horse.
Move this horse from it's starting position to the grid above the finish line. Place the horse in the hole where the horse number lines up with the .50 cent column.
Any player that has this card (i.e. horse number) should turn the card over. This horse is not in the race and can not win.

The next person to the left rolls the dice, whatever number is rolled that is the .75 cent horse.
Move this horse from it's starting position to the grid above the finish line. Place the horse in the hole where the horse number lines up with the .75 cent column.
Any player that has this card (i.e. horse number) should turn the card over. This horse is not in the race and can not win.

The next person to the left rolls the dice, whatever number is rolled that is the $1.00 horse.
Move this horse from it's starting position to the grid above the finish line. Place the horse in the hole where the horse number lines up with the $1.00 column.
Any player that has this card (i.e. horse number) should turn the card over. This horse is not in the race and can not win.

You are now ready to start the horse race.
The next person to the left rolls the dice.
If the person rolls a number that matches a money horse, that person pays the pot the corresponding amount. (you will need a cup to hold the pot, not included)
If the person rolls a number that matches a horse that is in the race, then you move the horse one spot closer to the finish line.
The next person to the left rolls the dice.
If the person rolls a number that matches a money horse, that person pays the pot the corresponding amount.
If the person rolls a number that matches a horse that is in the race, then you move the horse one spot closer to the finish line.
and so on.

Keep doing this until a horse crosses the finish line.

Once a horse crosses the finish line, anyone who has that card/horse number wins a portion of the pot.
Since there are four of every number in the card deck, the pot will be split four ways.
If four different players have a winning number then the pot is split four ways. (25% each)
If a player has a pair (two winning numbers) that player gets 50% of the pot.
If a player has three of a kind (three winning numbers) that player gets 75% of the pot.
If a player has four of a kind (four winning numbers) that player gets the whole pot.
